Full description and specifications

Corylus avellana 'Contorta', also known as contorted hazel or dwarf contorted hazel, is a decorative variety of common hazel (Corylus avellana). It is an ornamental plant valued for its unusually twisted and contorted branches, as well as for its early spring flowers.

Size and shape : This variety of hazelnut has a slow growth and reaches a height and width of about 2.5-4 meters. The branches are twisted and contorted in an attractive way, giving the plant an interesting sculptural appearance, especially in winter, when the leaves have fallen.

Flowers : The plant blooms early in the spring, before the leaves appear. The flowers are elongated yellow-green shapes, known as "catines". Male catkins are longer and more visible, while female catkins are smaller and less obvious.

Fruits : Corylus avellana 'Contorta' produces hazelnuts, just like the common hazelnut. The hazelnuts are relatively small, round and dark brown, being protected by a leafy bract. However, fruit production is often limited compared to other cultivars of Corylus avellana.

Cultivation : Corylus avellana 'Contorta' grows best in fertile, well-drained soils and in full sun or partial shade. The plant is resistant to low temperatures and adapts to a variety of growing conditions. It withstands temperatures up to -35°C.

Landscape use : Due to its unusual appearance, Corylus avellana 'Contorta' is suitable to be planted as a focal point in gardens or in combination with other ornamental plants. It is also suitable for themed gardens, gardens with wooden structures or as an element of interest during winter.
