Clematis 'Princess Diana' is an elegant and distinctive variety of clematis, named in honor of Princess Diana of Wales. This climbing plant from the Texensis group is prized for its unusual, tulip-shaped flowers and graceful appearance, reflecting the delicacy and beauty associated with its name.

Flower appearance

  • Shape : The flowers are tubular, resembling a tulip or an elongated bell, with the tips of the tepals slightly turned outwards. This structure gives them a unique appearance among other clematis varieties.
  • Color : The outside of the tepals is a deep, vibrant pink, often described as fuchsia or salmon pink, while the inside is paler, with shades of light pink to white. This combination creates a subtle and attractive contrast.
  • Size : The flowers measure between 5 and 7 cm in length, being smaller than those of large-flowered clematis, but compensating for their abundance and graceful shape.
  • Flowering period : Blooms from June to September , providing a long presence in the garden throughout the summer and early fall.

Growth characteristics

  • Height : Grows up to 2-3 meters, being a moderately sized climbing plant, ideal for smaller spaces or vertical supports.
  • Foliage : The leaves are bright green, oval and slightly glossy, perfectly complementing the delicate flowers.
  • Vigor : It is a vigorous plant, but not overly invasive, with thin stems that easily cling to supports.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun or partial shade, with roots protected from direct light (e.g., by mulch or low plants at the base).
  • Soil : It needs a well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Watering should be regular, especially during hot periods, but without leaving the soil soaked.
  • Pruning : It is part of pruning group 3, which means it blooms on the new growth of the year. It is recommended to prune it drastically in spring, about 20-30 cm above the ground, to stimulate abundant flowering.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance : It is resistant to diseases and various climatic conditions, withstanding temperatures down to -20°C with minimal protection.
  • Fertilization : Applying a slow-release fertilizer in spring helps support growth and flowering.
  • Special care : Due to its Texensis origin, it is more drought tolerant than other clematis, but still appreciates constant hydration.

Origin

Clematis 'Princess Diana' was introduced in 1984 by British breeder Barry Fretwell as a tribute to Princess Diana. It is a hybrid from the Texensis group, known for its bell-shaped flowers and natural hardiness, inherited from species native to Texas, USA.

Garden use

This variety is perfect for adding a romantic and delicate accent to the garden. It can be grown on trellises, fences, pergolas or even through shrubs and small trees, where its bright pink flowers stand out. It combines beautifully with white or yellow flowering plants, such as roses or lavender, for a contrasting effect.

Height with pot included: approx. 75 cm
