Clematis forsteri 'Joe' is an evergreen (sometimes semi-evergreen, depending on the climate) clematis cultivar native to New Zealand. It is a climbing, woody vine.
The leaves are opposite, usually trifoliolate, each leaflet having an elliptical-lanceolate shape, with slightly wavy or entire edges. The texture of the leaves is glossy and relatively thick, which gives the plant good resistance to humidity variations. In the right climate, this clematis keeps most of its foliage throughout the year.
The flowers are medium-sized (around 4 cm) and star-shaped, with petals in shades of cream or yellowish-white, sometimes with green tints, especially towards the base. The flowers appear between March and April and are slightly fragrant, with a delicate aroma that attracts pollinating insects. The stamens are numerous, thin and concentrically arranged, with light yellow anthers. After flowering, fluffy infructescences are formed, represented by achenes provided with long hairs.
Clematis forsteri 'Joe' prefers sunny or partially shaded areas, with well-drained, slightly acidic or neutral soil. The plant needs constant, but not excessive, moisture. Light pruning after flowering is recommended to stimulate growth/branching and maintain the plant in a neat shape.
This cultivar is appreciated for its decorative appearance, often used to cover fences, pergolas or walls, offering abundant flowering and attractive foliage all year round. With its combination of flower shape, discreet color and persistent foliage, Clematis forsteri 'Joe' is a great choice for gardens that emphasize textures and a natural look.
