Winter clematis, evergreen - Clematis cirrhosa 'Lansdowne Gem' (scented flowers)
Clematis cirrhosa 'Lansdowne Gem' is a perennial climbing plant, valued for its distinctive flowers, which appear especially in the colder months of the year.
This variety has a vigorous growth, reaching heights of up to 3-4 meters. The leaves are semi-perennial, that is, some of them remain on the plant during the winter, depending on the climatic conditions. In the case of extreme winters, it is possible for the plant to lose all its leaves.
Flowering generally begins in November or December and can continue until February or March.
The delicate bell-shaped flowers are wine red on the inside, with a cream reverse and have cream anthers. The plant was discovered as a mutation of the variety 'Freckles' in 1995 by Merv Jerard of Lansdowne Valley, Christchurch, New Zealand .
The flowers are fragrant, with a slight hint of citrus .
To encourage a proper/abundant winter flowering, as well as to preserve the foliage, it is recommended to place the plant in spaces protected from blizzards/strong air currents.
Attention - under certain conditions, Clematis cirrhosa can go dormant during the warm season - in which case it is necessary to reduce watering. Dormancy may also involve some damage to the foliage.
