Winter clematis, evergreen - Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' (scented flowers)
Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' is a perennial climbing plant, valued for its distinctive flowers, which appear especially in the colder months of the year.
This variety has a vigorous growth, reaching heights of up to 3-4 meters. The leaves are semi-evergreen, meaning some of them remain on the plant throughout the winter, depending on the climatic conditions. In extreme winters, it is possible for the plant to lose all its leaves.
Flowering generally begins in November or December and may continue until February or March. The flowers are bell-shaped and arranged singly. They have a pale cream background, over which are scattered dark purple or dark brown spots, resembling freckles - hence the name 'Freckles'. The flowers are fragrant .
To encourage proper/abundant winter flowering, as well as preserving the foliage, it is recommended to place the plant in areas protected from blizzards/strong drafts.
Full botanical name: Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles'
Caution - under certain conditions, Clematis cirrhosa may go dormant during the warm season - in which case it is necessary to reduce watering. The dormancy may also involve some damage to the foliage.
Note: Occasionally, atypical blooms have been observed, namely greenish-white flowers. It is possible that these blooms occur due to the fact that the plants bloomed in greenhouse conditions (cold) and low light.
