Cattleya maxima var. coerulea (scented flowers)

Cattleya maxima var. coerulea - botanical species widespread in the regions of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and on the northern coast of Peru, finds its home at altitudes ranging from 10 to 1500 meters. Its predilection for coastal forests, which experience dry seasons, underlines its remarkable adaptability. Of medium size and with tolerance for a cool to hot climate, the plant grows as an epiphyte, with an occasional presence as a lithophyte. It is distinguished by cylindrical pseudobulbs, slightly flattened and striated, which are accompanied by nesting sheaths, without leaves. A unique attribute is the singular, apical, oblong or elliptic-oblong shaped leaf, which clasps, has obtuse tips and is delicately bifurcated at the tip, having a thick, leathery texture.

The flowering period extends from autumn to winter, when the plant develops a spectacular, terminal inflorescence, which can reach lengths of up to 30-50 cm, either erect or arched, with a variable number of flowers, from a few to several, clustered racemes. The inflorescence appears from a mature pseudobulb, being preceded by a long basal sheath. The flowers, of captivating beauty, are not only long-lived, but also fragrant, bringing to mind the sweet aromas of heliotrope or sweet pea, and have a relatively dense texture. These are ingeniously arranged at the height of the leaf or even slightly above, creating an impressive visual spectacle.
