Campsis tagliabuana 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet' ('Takarazuka Yellow') is a striking hybrid vine, part of the Summer Jazz™ series, developed to offer gardeners a compact and easy-care alternative to traditional Campsis varieties. This plant combines floral beauty with controlled growth, making it ideal for smaller spaces such as urban gardens, balconies or trellises.

Floral Characteristics

The flowers are a strong point of this variety, having a distinct trumpet shape, with a diameter of about 8 cm, similar to that of Chinese trumpets (Campsis grandiflora). The initial color of the flowers is a vibrant peach-orange, which gradually turns into a rich golden yellow as the flowers mature. The throats of the flowers are a deep reddish-orange, with prominent red veins, which add depth and contrast. The flowers are grouped in long racemes, which can contain up to 60 buds or more, opening continuously from early July until the first frosts, ensuring a long flowering period. Although the flowers do not have a strong fragrance, they are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinating insects, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden.

Growth and Care

Campsis tagliabuana 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet' is distinguished by its compact growth, reaching a maximum height of around 3 metres, making it much more manageable than other vines in the Campsis genus, which can become invasive. The foliage is a dark, clean green, composed of pinnate leaves, providing a lush backdrop for its flowers. The plant prefers full sun exposure to maximize flowering, but can also tolerate partial shade, although in this case flower production may be reduced. As for the soil, it adapts to various types, but thrives in fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Pruning is minimal, preferably carried out in early spring (March), to remove dead wood and stimulate the growth of new shoots. This variety is also resistant to most pests, although it may occasionally be affected by aphids or mites.

It is recommended to plant it in a sheltered location to protect the plant from strong winds and extreme cold, especially in more northern climates.

Origin

The Summer Jazz™ series, of which 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet' is a part, was developed by Koichi Sakuae of Takarazuka, Japan, between 2008 and 2012. 'Takarazuka Yellow', the cultivar name, is one of three color variations introduced in this series, along with 'Fire' (red) and 'Tangerine' (orange). The series was created to provide gardeners with trumpet vine varieties with a more restrained vigor, while retaining the ornamental appeal of large flowers and a long flowering period. Campsis tagliabuana is a hybrid between Campsis grandiflora (native to East Asia) and Campsis radicans (native to the southeastern United States), which explains its combination of hardiness and floral beauty.

In the cold season the plants are shortened and leafless, looking like sticks. This is normal.
