Campsis tagliabuana 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet' ('Takarazuka Yellow') is a remarkable hybrid vine, part of the Summer Jazz™ series, developed to offer gardeners a compact and easy-to-care-for alternative to traditional Campsis varieties. This plant combines floral beauty with controlled growth, making it ideal for smaller spaces such as urban gardens, balconies, or trellises.

Floral Features

The flowers are a highlight of this variety, having a distinct trumpet shape, about 8 cm in diameter, similar to Chinese trumpet vines (Campsis grandiflora). The initial color of the flowers is a vibrant peach-orange, which gradually changes to a rich golden yellow as the flowers mature. The flower throats are a deep reddish-orange, with prominent red veins, adding depth and contrast. The flowers are grouped in long clusters, which can contain up to 60 buds or more, opening continuously from early July until the first frosts, ensuring a long blooming period. Although the flowers do not have a strong scent, they are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, contributing to garden biodiversity.

Growth and Care

Campsis tagliabuana 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet' stands out for its compact growth, reaching a maximum height of about 3 meters, making it much more manageable than other Campsis vines, which can become invasive. The foliage is a clean dark green, composed of pinnate leaves, providing a lush backdrop for its flowers. The plant prefers full sun exposure to maximize flowering but can also tolerate partial shade, although flower production may be reduced in this case. Regarding soil, it adapts to various types but thrives in fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Pruning is minimal, preferably done in early spring (March), to remove dead wood and stimulate new shoot growth. This variety is also resistant to most pests, although it can occasionally be affected by aphids or mites.

It is recommended to plant it in a sheltered spot to protect the plant from strong winds and extreme cold, especially in northern climates.

Origin

The Summer Jazz™ series, which includes 'Summer Jazz™ Golden Trumpet', was developed by Koichi Sakuae from Takarazuka, Japan, between 2008 and 2012. 'Takarazuka Yellow', the cultivar name, is one of three color variants introduced in this series, alongside 'Fire' (red) and 'Tangerine' (orange). The series was created to offer gardeners trumpet vine varieties with more restrained vigor while maintaining the ornamental appeal of large flowers and a long blooming period. Campsis tagliabuana is a hybrid between Campsis grandiflora (native to East Asia) and Campsis radicans (native to the southeastern United States), which explains its combination of hardiness and floral beauty.

During the cold season, the plants are shortened and leafless, resembling sticks. This appearance is normal.
