• Size : The plant can grow up to 30-50 cm in height, making it suitable for medium-sized indoor spaces.
• Origin : It is native to the tropical forests of South America, where it grows in shady areas with high humidity.
Care
1. Light
• Preferences : Calathea 'Northern Lights' prefers moderate to bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves and fade the colors.
• Indoors : Place it in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight. It is perfect for rooms with east or north facing windows.
2. Watering
• Frequency : Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering. Water the plant when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch.
• Water quality : Use filtered water or rainwater, as it is sensitive to chlorine and other chemicals in tap water.
3. Soil
• Tip : Use a well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A mix of all-purpose soil with peat and perlite is ideal.
• Drainage : Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
4. Humidity
• High level : This plant requires high humidity, above 50-60%. If the air in the room is dry, use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray with pebbles and water.
• Spraying : Spray the leaves with filtered water occasionally, but do not overdo it, to prevent the appearance of fungal diseases.
5. Temperature
• Optimal range : Calathea 'Northern Lights' prefers temperatures between 18-25°C. It is sensitive to temperatures below 15°C and cold drafts.
• Avoid : Do not place the plant near direct heat sources or in places with sudden temperature changes.
6. Fertilization
• Active season : During the growing period (spring-summer), fertilize the plant once every 4-6 weeks using a liquid fertilizer for indoor plants, diluted to half the recommended concentration.
• Winter : Fertilization is not necessary during the dormant period.
7. Replanting
• Frequency : Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when the roots completely fill the pot.
• Ideal time : Replanting is done in spring, using a pot that is only one size larger than the previous one.
Note: Calathea is a plant sensitive to temperature differences. Therefore, it is possible that you will receive these plants with some defects on the leaves, but these do not affect the viability of the plant.
