• Size: The plant can grow up to 30-50 cm in height, making it suitable for medium-sized indoor spaces.
• Origin: It originates from the tropical forests of South America, where it grows in shaded areas with high humidity.
Care
1. Light
• Preferences: Calathea ‘Northern Lights’ prefers moderate to strong indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves and fade the colors.
• Indoor: Place it in a bright spot, but without direct sunlight. It is perfect for rooms with windows facing east or north.
2. Watering
• Frequency: Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering. Water the plant when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch.
• Water quality: Use filtered or rainwater, as it is sensitive to chlorine and other chemicals in tap water.
3. Soil
• Type: Use well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A mix of universal soil with peat and perlite is ideal.
• Drainage: Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation.
4. Humidity
• High level: This plant requires high humidity, over 50-60%. If the room air is dry, use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray with pebbles and water.
• Spraying: Occasionally spray the leaves with filtered water, but do not overdo it to prevent fungal diseases.
5. Temperature
• Optimal range: Calathea ‘Northern Lights’ prefers temperatures between 18-25°C. It is sensitive to temperatures below 15°C and cold drafts.
• Avoid: Do not place the plant near direct heat sources or in places with sudden temperature changes.
6. Fertilization
• Active season: During the growth period (spring-summer), fertilize the plant every 4-6 weeks using a liquid fertilizer for indoor plants, diluted to half the recommended concentration.
• Winter: Fertilization is not necessary during the dormant period.
7. Repotting
• Frequency: Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when the roots completely fill the pot.
• Ideal time: Repotting is done in spring, using a pot only one size larger than the previous one.
Note: Calathea is a plant sensitive to temperature differences. Therefore, you may receive these plants with some leaf defects, but these do not affect the plant's viability.
