Full description and specifications

The Podocarpus bonsai, also known as the Buddhist pine, is a popular species due to its dense foliage and ability to adapt to the formation.

It is an excellent choice for both beginners and advanced bonsai enthusiasts, due to its hardy nature and adaptability to a variety of conditions.

Podocarpus Bonsai Care Guide:

  1. Light: Podocarpus needs a lot of light, but it should be protected from direct sunlight during the summer to prevent burning of the leaves. The ideal location is in a place that benefits from sunlight in the morning and is protected during the day.
  2. Watering: Watering must be regular and adapted to the environmental conditions. The soil must be slightly moist, but not excessively so. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
  3. Humidity : The Podocarpus bonsai appreciates high humidity, so it is beneficial to spray the leaves regularly, especially in the warm months or if the heating is turned on in winter.
  4. Soil: Use a well-drained bonsai soil mix. A balanced mixture of bonsai soil, peat and perlite or gravel can provide adequate drainage and support.
  5. Fertilization: Fertilize the Podocarpus bonsai once a month during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.
  6. Pruning and shaping: Pruning is done to maintain the shape of the bonsai and encourage the development of a dense branching. It may be necessary to cut the growing tips frequently to encourage branching.
  7. Repotting: Repotting must be done every 2-3 years to prevent overcrowding of the roots. This is best done in late winter or early spring. When repotting, carefully remove part of the old roots to stimulate the growth of new ones.
