Bonsai Metasequoia (S Shape)

Metasequoia, also known as Chinese redwood sequoia, is a highly appreciated species for bonsai creation, due to its fine leaves and relatively fast growth. 

Care

Light and placement

The Metasequoia bonsai prefers a bright position, with direct sun exposure for at least a few hours a day. It is important to protect it from strong winds and late spring frost, which can affect new growth.

Watering

Watering should be regular and adjusted according to the season and environmental conditions. The soil should not dry out completely, but also should not be waterlogged. Ensuring good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Fertilization

Fertilization is best done during active growth periods, spring and summer, using a balanced bonsai fertilizer. During the dormant period, fertilization should be reduced or even stopped.

Pruning and shaping

Pruning is done to control growth and shape the tree. This is done by cutting new shoots at two or three leaves, depending on the desired shape. Wiring shaping can also be applied, but carefully to avoid damaging the bark or branches.

Transplanting

Transplanting is done every two to three years, in spring, before the growth period begins. It is an opportunity to trim roots that have grown too much and to replace the soil to ensure a fresh and nutritious environment.

Being a bonsai grown outdoors during the warm season, the foliage may sometimes show small imperfections caused by temperature variations, sun exposure, or environmental factors (wind, rain, insects). These aspects are normal for a plant grown outdoors and do not affect the bonsai's viability. The leaves naturally regenerate throughout the growth cycle.
