Bananier - Musa basjoo (banan japonez, hardy banana)
Musa basjoo, also known as the Japanese banana plant, is a cold-resistant banana species native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It is especially valued for its exotic appearance and the rhizome's ability to withstand low temperatures, down to approximately -12°C, if the rhizome is properly protected during winter. The leaves are lost when exposed to temperatures below -2°C.
Musa basjoo is one of the varieties with very good cold resistance, which recovers easily after winter and quickly resumes growth. In the cold season, you will need to protect the plant or place it indoors. In the warm season, it grows very well on the terrace or (in southern Romania) even planted in the yard, in direct sunlight.
The banana plant thrives best in full sun - due to its rapid growth, fertilization and watering during the growing season are essential.
The maximum height of this plant allows for indoor cultivation.
Characteristics:
• Leaves: Large, green, elongated, with a slightly waxy texture; can reach up to 2 meters in length.
• Stem (pseudostem): Thick and succulent, can reach between 2 and 4 meters in height.
• Cold resistance: It is one of the most cold-resistant banana species, but the leaves can be affected by frost.
• Rapid growth: Can reach maximum height in a single growing season.
Fruit characteristics:
• Size: Relatively small, about 5-7 cm long.
• Shape: Similar to regular bananas, but shorter and more robust.
• Color: Green when unripe, yellow when mature.
• Edible, but difficult to consume. The pulp is fibrous, slightly fleshy, and has a high content of hard seeds, which makes it hard to eat. The texture is rather dry and not creamy like commercial bananas (Musa acuminata).
• Seeds: Large, black, and hard.
Other known names: Japanese banana, hardy banana
Although not specially cultivated for its fruit, Musa Basjoo is valued for its ornamental value, being a popular choice in exotic gardens.
Note: Generally, the leaves of this plant are very fragile and show defects/damage or can be broken - this aspect is considered normal for a banana plant, and the plant has a very rapid growth rate. As it develops, this variety loses its lower leaves.
The price is valid for a single pot with one plant.
Height including pot: approx. 20 cm (varies depending on batch and season)
