The strawberry tree - Arbutus unedo

Arbutus unedo, popularly called the 'Strawberry Tree', is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe.

It is well known for its very attractive fruits, which have an appearance somewhat similar to strawberries.

The fruit is a red-orange sphere with a rough surface and a diameter of up to 2 cm, sweet when ripe, and contains small brown seeds. The ripening of the fruit takes up to 12 months - usually it occurs at the next flowering, the fruits remaining on the bush until this time.

It blooms between October and May, being among the few plants that bloom in the cold season.

Arbustus unedo is also highly valued for its high decorative value - its glossy, evergreen foliage, its white and yellow flowers mixed with fruits from the previous season - all of which give the plant a truly unique appearance.

Cold resistance: -15°C. It is recommended to plant in areas protected from strong winds/blizzards.
