Arborele de capsuni - Arbutus unedo
Arbutus unedo, commonly called 'Strawberry Tree', is an evergreen shrub originating from the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe.
It is well known for its very attractive fruits, which somewhat resemble strawberries in appearance.
The fruit is a red-orange sphere with a rough surface and a diameter of up to 2 cm, sweet when ripe, and contains small brown seeds. The fruit takes up to 12 months to mature – usually ripening by the next flowering season, with the fruits remaining on the shrub until that time.
It blooms from October to May, being among the few plants that flower during the cold season.
Arbutus unedo is highly valued also for its great decorative worth – the glossy, evergreen foliage, its white and yellow flowers mixed with fruits from the previous season – all these give the plant a truly unique appearance.
