Acca sellowiana (Feijoa sellowiana, Ananas Guava)
Acca sellowiana, also known as feijoa or guava, is a perennial, evergreen plant native to South America, valued especially for its fragrant and nutritious fruits.
The fruits of Acca sellowiana are about the size of an egg, with a thick dark green skin, and the flesh is creamy, with a texture reminiscent of jelly. Their taste is unique, being a blend of pineapple, guava, and strawberry, with a slight hint of mint. The fruits are particularly aromatic, having a pleasant and distinctive scent.
Feijoa fruits are recognized for their nutritional properties. They are rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, with a nutritional value similar to that of kiwi. They also contain a considerable amount of potassium and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and E.
The fruits can be eaten raw, directly from the skin, or used in various recipes, from fruit salads to desserts, juices, jams, or marmalades. The fruits are ripe when a strong pineapple scent is felt and when they begin to soften to the touch.
Acca sellowiana is a plant resistant to diseases and pests, easy to grow and maintain. It can reach heights of up to 3-5 meters and produces beautiful flowers with pink and white petals. The plant is self-fertile (or partially self-fertile), and for better pollination and higher yield, it is recommended to plant 2 specimens.
Frost resistance: -11°C. It is recommended to plant in areas sheltered from strong wind/blizzard. Severe winters can affect fruiting in the following season.
