Acca sellowiana (Feijoa sellowiana, Pineapple Guava)
Acca sellowiana, also known as feijoa or guava, is a perennial, evergreen plant (green all year round), originally from South America, especially appreciated for its aromatic and nutritious fruits.
The fruits of Acca sellowiana are the size of an egg, with a dark green, thick skin, and the pulp is creamy, with a texture reminiscent of gelatin. Their taste is unique, being a combination of pineapple, guava and strawberry, with a slight scent of mint. The fruits are particularly aromatic, having a pleasant and distinctive smell.
Feijoa fruits are recognized for their nutritional properties. They are rich in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, having a nutritional value similar to that of kiwi. They also contain a considerable amount of potassium and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and E.
The fruits can be eaten raw, directly from the peel, or used in various recipes, from fruit salads to desserts, juices, jams or marmalades. The fruits are ripe when a strong smell of pineapple is felt and when they start to become soft to the touch.
Acca sellowiana is a plant resistant to diseases and pests, easy to grow and maintain. It can reach heights of up to 3-5 meters and produces beautiful flowers with pink and white petals. The plant is self-fertile (or partially self-fertile), and for superior pollination and a higher yield, it is recommended to plant 2 specimens.
Cold resistance: -11°C. Planting in areas protected from strong wind/blizzard is recommended. Frosty winters can affect fruiting in the following season.
