Lithops, also known as "living stones", are small, interesting plants native to southern Africa that are relatively easy to grow as houseplants. They were first discovered by William John Burchell in 1811 during a botanical expedition to southern Africa.
These plants, from the plant family Mesembryanthemaceae (Aizoaceae), were named for their stone-like appearance: lithos (= stone) and opsis > (= like).
In their native habitats of Namibia and South Africa they have evolved to blend in so well with their surroundings - looking exactly like the sand and rocks they live in, in shape, size and colour - that they can be quite difficult to spot, even for those trained and with years of experience.
