Rhododendron 'Fireball'

Rhododendron (Mollis Azalea Grp) 'Fireball' is a spectacular plant due to its brightly colored flowers and dense foliage. This azalea is part of the Mollis group, known for its hybrid azaleas that are resistant to low temperatures and have abundant flowering. 'Fireball', as the name suggests, impresses with its intense bright red colors, offering a strong contrast in gardens.

Rhododendron 'Fireball' can reach heights of approximately 1.2-1.5 meters and a similar spread, forming a compact and well-branched bush.

The foliage is dark green, with oval to lanceolate leaves, which can be up to 5-10 cm long. The leaves can show a beautiful bronze color during autumn.

The flowers are the most spectacular aspect of this plant, with bright red petals and an attractive shape. The flowers appear in dense bouquets in the upper part of the bushes from spring to early summer. The 'Fireball' flowers usually appear in May or early June, depending on the climate.

Light : It prefers partially shaded places, with protection from the direct midday sun, but it can also tolerate full sun if the necessary humidity is ensured.

• Soil : The ideal soil for 'Fireball' is well-drained, acidic (pH between 4.5 and 6.0), rich in organic matter. It is important to avoid limestone or alkaline soils.
• Watering : Azaleas need a constantly moist, but not boggy, soil. Watering must be adjusted according to the ambient temperature and humidity, avoiding soil saturation.
• Fertilization : Apply special fertilizers for azaleas or rhododendrons during active growth, following the manufacturer's instructions.
• Pruning : Pruning is done after the plant has finished its flowering period, to stimulate branching and to maintain the desired shape. Remove wilted flowers and dry or damaged branches.
• Winter protection : Although it is cold hardy, in areas with severe winters, 'Fireball' can benefit from additional protection, such as covering the base of the plant with a thick layer of mulch to protect the roots from frost.
