The bonsai Zelkova serrata, also known as Japanese Elm, is one of the most refined species cultivated as bonsai. Native to East Asia, it impresses with its strong trunk, fine branches, and balanced crown, reminiscent of old trees shaped by the wind in traditional Japanese landscapes.

🌿 Botanical characteristics
Zelkova belongs to the Ulmaceae family and is notable for its small, oval, glossy leaves, a deep green in summer that can take on coppery shades in autumn. It grows slowly and compactly, making it an ideal choice for bonsai lovers who want a resilient and spectacular plant through its natural form.

💧 Care and growing conditions

  • Light: prefers a bright spot, but sheltered from direct sunlight during the hottest hours.

  • Watering: keep the substrate slightly moist, avoiding both complete drying and excess water. Check the soil periodically, especially in summer.

  • Optimal temperature: 15–25°C.

  • Fertilization: regular application of a liquid fertilizer for bonsai is recommended during the growing season.

  • Repotting: every 2–3 years, in spring, in an airy substrate rich in organic matter.
