Chinese banana tree - Musa dajiao (Da Jiao)
Musa dajiao , popularly known as the "big banana" (Da Jiao, in Mandarin) is a species of banana native to southern China, especially Yunnan province. The plant can reach 5–7 meters in height, with large leaves, over 2 meters long, and a robust false stem. The fruits are larger than regular bananas, reaching 30 cm in length, with a thick peel and sweet, slightly fibrous pulp, used mainly for cooking.
This species prefers warm and humid climates, is drought-resistant and used both culinary and ornamentally. It is appreciated in subtropical regions for its impressive size and versatility, having a significant local economic value.
This variety has better cold resistance than other edible banana species. During the cold waves in China in the 1990s, Da Jiao was the variety that resisted the best. The plants did not suffer much, although temperatures reached -9°C. However, growers' expectations must be realistic - the false stem (stipe) must not freeze, otherwise flowering will not occur. Fruit ripening also takes time - at least 4 months must pass from the beginning of flowering to harvest.
Height with pot included: approx. 25+ cm (depending on season)
Note: In general, the leaves of this plant are very fragile and show defects/damage or may be broken - this is considered normal for a banana plant, and the plant has a very fast growth rate. As it develops, this variety loses its leaves at the base. Sometimes plants will be shipped without leaves - this has no consequences on the further development of the plant.
