Ribes nigrum 'Josta' (Jostaberry - currant x gooseberry) D19
The black currant Ribes nigrum 'Josta' is an interesting hybrid, resulting from the cross between the black currant (Ribes nigrum) and the gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa or Ribes grossularia), intended to combine the positive features of both parent species. The name 'Josta' comes from a combination of the German words for blackcurrant (Johannisbeere) and gooseberry (Stachelbeere), reflecting its hybrid origins.
The vigorous and resistant plant, 'Josta' grows in the form of a bush and can reach heights of 1-2 meters. The leaves are similar to those of the blackcurrant, dark green in color and with jagged edges. The small and discreet flowers, usually pink or green in color, appear in spring and are followed by the hybrid fruits.
The 'Josta' fruits are larger than those of the common blackcurrant and have a slightly elongated shape, similar to a gooseberry. The colors of the fruits vary from black-purple to black and they have a unique taste, a combination between the sweetness of the blackcurrant and the slight sourness specific to the gooseberry, being appreciated both for fresh consumption and for processing into jams, juices and other products.
Blackcurrant 'Josta' prefers well-drained soils, rich in organic matter and a sunny or semi-shaded location. It is resistant to low temperatures, which makes it suitable for a variety of climates, including colder areas. It also shows good resistance to most diseases and pests specific to currants and gooseberries.
To obtain a rich harvest, it is recommended to plant in groups, to facilitate pollination.
