Mastic tree - Pistacia lentiscus
Pistacia lentiscus - an evergreen ornamental tree of Mediterranean origin, with high decorative value as well as practical use.
Although it is often confused with the related variety that produces pistachios (Pistacia vera), Pistacia lentiscus has its own benefits. From it is obtained the famous flavoring - Mastic - a resin with unique properties, widely used in the food industry today. The history of mastic is very complex and fascinating - it essentially means tradition, being a resin harvested for at least 2500 years and is an important part of the history of Greece (and beyond). Hippocrates used mastic to prevent digestive problems, to treat colds, and also as a mouthwash.
The plant’s leaves are widely used in flower arranging, due to their superior durability and pleasant appearance.
