Mastic tree - Pistacia lentiscus
Pistacia lentiscus - decorative evergreen tree of Mediterranean origin, with great decorative value, but also with a pactic role.
Although it is often confused with the related variety that produces pistachios (Pistacia vera), Pistacia lentiscus has its own benefits. From it is obtained the famous flavoring - Mastic - a resin with unique properties, used intensively in the food industry today. The history of mastic is very complex and fascinating - basically, it means tradition, being a resin harvested for at least 2500 years and it is an important part of the history of Greece (and not only). Hippocrates used mastic to prevent digestive problems, to treat colds, but also as a mouthwash.
