Magnolia soulangeana – large, fragrant flowers (young specimens)

Magnolia × soulangeana, commonly known as Saucer Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia, is one of the most highly regarded magnolia hybrids. It is the result of crossing Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora.

It is a small tree or large shrub, reaching 4–8 m in height, with moderate growth. The flowers appear in early spring, before the leaves, and are large and cup- or tulip-shaped, pinkish-purple on the outside and creamy white on the inside. Its floral display is one of the most beautiful sights in the spring garden. The leaves are broad and deep green, turning deciduous in autumn.

• Large, spectacular, cup-shaped flowers (pink and white)
• Early flowering, before the leaves appear
• Small tree / large shrub (4–8 m)
• Good frost resistance (down to approximately -20°C)
• Elegant appearance throughout the year

Simple care:

• Light: partial shade to full sun. It prefers a position sheltered from cold winds.
• Temperature: frost-resistant down to -18 to -20°C. The flowers may be affected by late spring frosts.
• Watering: moderate during the first few years. Once established, it tolerates drier periods.
• Soil: prefers rich, well-drained acidic or neutral soils. Avoid highly alkaline, chalky soils.
• Pruning: minimal. Prune only if necessary, after flowering.

Although the variety withstands cold without problems, exposing young plants to temperatures below -10°C is not recommended.
