Magnolia grandiflora 'Double Nantais' (Nannetensis)
Magnolia grandiflora 'Double Nantais' (also known as Magnolia grandiflora 'Nannetensis') is a remarkable variety of magnolia distinguished by its spectacular and large flowers. This cultivar originates from France and is valued for its unique inflorescences, which appear double due to the large number of petals.
Magnolia grandiflora 'Double Nantais' stands out with large flowers, about 24-26 cm, creamy white in colour, shaped similarly to lotus flowers. Their scent not only attracts insects, such as bees, but also most perfumers. Especially during early evenings and late afternoons, they emit a sweet, citrusy fragrance that spreads far. Although a flower lasts only a day or two, it is quickly replaced, so the tree blooms from June to September. The more developed the plant, the more flowers it produces.
The leaves are evergreen, ranging from medium green to dark green, sturdy and leathery in texture, covered on the underside with a reddish-brown coating known as indumentum. This cultivar grows quickly, adding about 30-40 cm (12-18 inches) per year, making it an excellent choice for those wishing to quickly add height and structure to their garden.
'Magnolia grandiflora 'Double Nantais' is known for its ability to bloom early in life, with the beauty of its impressive flowers visible even on young plants. It is recommended to avoid pruning, especially as it can affect flowering. If size reduction is necessary, it should be done after the frost period, at the beginning of spring, taking care not to cut branches with flower buds, except after the flowers have withered.
It is resistant to diseases and pests and prefers well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.
Cold resistance: withstands down to -20°C. It is preferable to plant it in areas sheltered from strong air currents, for the most pleasing appearance of the foliage.
