Magnolia 'Black Beauty' - unique, fragrant flowers
Magnolia 'Black Beauty' is another brooklynensis hybrid, obtained in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, USA. It is a cross between Magnolia acuminata and Magnolia liliiflora. It produces flowers with sizes varying between 10 and 20 cm, intense red-purple outside and almost white-cream inside. The petals are narrow and thick, and the flowers never open wide - they remain half-open like a lily. The perfume is discreet and very pleasant.
Flowering starts early, but a little later than M. soulangeana or M. stellata hybrids, which gives it a good chance to escape late frosts. Black Beauty forms a vertical, densely branched shrub.
Size at maturity . It is a medium-sized tree, growing up to a height of 3-4 meters, which makes it suitable for small gardens and limited spaces.
General appearance : The foliage is dark green, creating a beautiful background that accentuates the contrast with the dark flowers even more.
