Lonicera caprifolium, also known as Italian honeysuckle or European honeysuckle, is a perennial climbing plant, appreciated for its very fragrant flowers. This species of honeysuckle produces tubular flowers, colored in shades of white and yellow, that bloom from spring to summer. The flowers are followed by small, red, spherical fruits, which add visual interest, but are not edible.
The foliage is semi-persistent or evergreen depending on the climate, with oval, opposite leaves that end at the top. Lonicera caprifolium prefers sunny or partially shaded places and a well-drained soil, being often used to cover fences, pergolas or other garden structures, due to its fast growth and ability to provide a dense green screen.
The plant is valued in landscaping not only for the beauty and fragrance of its flowers, but also for its ability to attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, thus contributing to the biodiversity of the garden.
