Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkameriana) - cold resistant lemon
The Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkameriana) is a hybrid between a lemon and a bitter orange, known for its use both in horticulture and in the kitchen. The fruit is medium in size, with a thick yellow-orange peel and a slightly round shape. The taste is less acidic than ordinary lemons, with a slight bitter tinge due to the influence of bitter orange. The aroma is more subtle, but suitable for juices, sauces and marinades.
The name of the plant was established in honor of the well-known German botanist, Johann Christoph Volkamer.
The fruit of the Volkamer lemon is mainly used for juices, peel and in culinary preparations where a milder acidity is desired. It is ideal for sauces, marinades and drinks, bringing a subtle and slightly bitter citrus note. In addition, the peel can be used in desserts or for zest. Also, the essential oils from the peel are used in cosmetic products due to their antioxidant properties.
It is frequently used as a rootstock in the citrus industry, due to its resistance to diseases and adaptability to different types of soil. This robustness allows it to be used in regions where other citrus trees are vulnerable to various environmental conditions.
The cold resistance of the Volkamer lemon is moderate, being able to tolerate temperatures up to -6°C . It is more resistant to frost than other lemon varieties, but less resistant than species such as Yuzu.
