Lamai Volkamer (Citrus volkameriana) - lamai rezistent la frig
Volkamer Lemon (Citrus volkameriana) is a hybrid between lemon and bitter orange, known for its use both in gardening and in the kitchen. The fruit is medium-sized, with a thick yellow-orange peel and a slightly rounded shape. The taste is less sour than that of common lemons, with a slight bitter hint due to the influence of the bitter orange. The aroma is more subtle but suitable for juices, sauces, and marinades.
The plant’s name was given in honor of the well-known German botanist, Johann Christoph Volkamer.
The fruit of the Volkamer lemon is mainly used for juices, zest, and culinary dishes where a milder acidity is desired. It is ideal for sauces, marinades, and drinks, bringing a subtle citrus note with a slight bitterness. Additionally, the peel can be used in desserts or for zest. Also, the essential oils from the peel are used in cosmetic products due to their antioxidant properties.
It is frequently used as a rootstock in the citrus industry because of its disease resistance and adaptability to various soil types. This sturdiness allows it to be used in regions where other citrus trees are vulnerable to different environmental conditions.
Cold resistance of the Volkamer lemon is moderate, able to tolerate temperatures of down to -6°C. It is more frost-resistant than other lemon varieties but less so than species like Yuzu.
