Full description and specifications

Kniphofia, also known as "Torch Lily" or "Red Hot Poker", is a perennial plant native to South Africa, which has become popular in gardens due to its spectacular and colorful flowers. This plant adds a splash of vibrant color and a unique texture to any landscape

Kniphofia has long and straight stems that can reach heights of up to 1.5 meters, depending on the variety. The leaves are long, narrow and dark green, grass-like. The flowers are the most remarkable aspect of the plant, being grouped in dense and cylindrical inflorescences that look like torches of fire. The colors of the flowers vary from red, orange and yellow, to shades of green and even bronze, blooming from early summer to late autumn.

Care

  • Light and location : Kniphofia prefers sunny places, but also tolerates semi-shade. For the best results and abundant flowering, choose a place well exposed to the sun.

  • Soil : This plant is not pretentious regarding the type of soil, but it grows best in well-drained and fertile soils. If the soil in the garden is heavy and clayey, it is recommended to improve it with compost or sand to improve drainage.

  • Watering : Kniphofia requires regular watering, but the soil must never be constantly wet. Let the soil dry a little between waterings. The plant is relatively resistant to drought once it has stabilized.

  • Fertilization : Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again in early summer to stimulate growth and flowering.

  • Pruning : After flowering, cut off old flower stems to encourage new blooms and to maintain the neat appearance of the plant. At the end of the season, you can cut dry or damaged leaves.

  • Wintering : In areas with harsh winters, it is recommended to cover the plant with a layer of mulch to protect it from frost.

  • Propagation : Kniphofia can be propagated by dividing the bushes in spring or by seeds.
