Kanuma is a granular and porous substrate of Japanese origin, extracted from the Kanuma area in Tochigi Prefecture, and obtained from natural deposits of volcanic peat. It is mainly used in the cultivation of bonsai and plants that require very good drainage and an acidic pH, being considered a reference substrate for acid-loving species.
Its light and porous structure creates an ideal environment for root development, offering an excellent balance between drainage, water retention, and aeration. Compared to akadama, Kanuma provides about 20% higher water retention while maintaining a high level of oxygenation at the root system.
Its acidic pH, ranging between 4.5 and 5.5, makes it ideal for azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, bonsai, and other plants that prefer an acidic and stable soil.
Main advantages
excellent drainage, preventing excess water accumulation
acidic pH (4.5–5.5), suitable for acid-loving plants
good water and air retention, without risk of compaction
porous structure, with constant root aeration
good physical stability over time
natural, biodegradable, and ecological material
Recommended for
bonsai, especially acid-loving species
azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias
plants that require acidic soil and very good drainage
use as a primary substrate or in custom mixes
Kanuma can be used both as a pure substrate and in combination with other materials such as akadama, pumice, or peat, depending on the species, climate, and grower’s level of experience.
