Laurus Nobilis, also known as bay or laurel, is a tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It is highly valued both for its ornamental value and for the use of its aromatic leaves in gastronomy.
The tree can reach heights of up to 10-18 meters, although it is often kept much smaller, especially when grown in pots. The leaves are lanceolate, dark green, glossy on the surface and more matte on the underside. They are frequently used in cooking to flavor various dishes.
Regarding care, Laurus Nobilis prefers well-drained soil and a sunny or partially shaded position. It is drought-resistant once adapted to the environment where it is planted, but prefers regular watering during the warmer periods of the year. It is resistant to most types of pests and diseases, making it relatively easy to maintain.
Laurus Nobilis does not tolerate very low temperatures. Generally, it is considered resistant to temperatures down to about -7 degrees Celsius, although this figure may vary depending on soil and humidity conditions. In areas where temperatures can drop below this threshold, it is recommended to plant Laurus Nobilis in a protected location or to use protective methods, such as covering the soil with a layer of mulch to help insulate the roots.
If the plant is kept in pots and exposed to temperatures below zero degrees Celsius, there is a risk of root freezing. In this case, it is recommended to move the pots to an indoor space where the temperature does not drop below zero.
Symbolically, the laurel has often been associated with victory and success, being used in laurel wreaths that were given in antiquity to people of great merit or heroes.
