Clematis 'Multi Blue' is a variety with large flowers of 10-15 cm and flowering in the spring season. The flower of this variety is unique - it opens as a single flower, but over time the inner petals develop, the flower as a whole becoming double. This happens mainly during spring flowering - during the summer-autumn wave the flowers tend to remain semi-double or single.

Classification: Early Large-flowered Group

Flower appearance

  • Shape : The flowers are double, with multiple layers of overlapping tepals, giving them a full and rich appearance. The outer tepals are longer and wider, while the inner ones are shorter, creating an impressive three-dimensional texture.
  • Color : The predominant color is a deep blue-violet, sometimes with lighter shades towards the edges or center, depending on the light and the stage of maturity of the flower. The vibrant tone is one of its defining features.
  • Size : The flowers have a diameter of 10-15 cm, being considered large compared to other clematis.
  • Flowering period : It blooms in two main waves – first in May-June on old wood, with double flowers, and then in August-September on new growth, when the flowers can be semi-double or single, but equally attractive.

Growth characteristics

  • Height : It grows up to 2-3 meters, being a moderately sized climbing plant, suitable for trellises, fences or pergolas.
  • Foliage : The leaves are medium green, oval, and glossy, providing a contrasting backdrop for the blue-purple flowers.
  • Vigor : It is a robust plant, with vigorous growth but not excessively invasive, which makes it easy to manage.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun or partial shade, with roots protected from direct light (by mulching or low plants at the base).
  • Soil : Requires well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Watering should be regular, avoiding excess water.
  • Pruning : It belongs to pruning group 2, which involves light pruning in spring (about 1 meter from the ground) to remove dead wood and stimulate further growth and flowering.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance : It is resistant to most common clematis diseases and tolerates temperate winters well.
  • Fertilization : Benefits from a balanced fertilizer applied in spring and summer to support abundant flowering.
  • Special care : To maintain the double appearance of the flowers, it is important not to prune too drastically, as double flowers appear mainly on old wood.

Origin

Clematis 'Multi Blue' was developed in the Netherlands by breeder J. van Zoest in the 1980s. It is considered a mutation of the variety 'The President', from which it inherited the intense blue color, but with the added feature of double flowers, which makes it more special.

First year = roots, second year = shoots and branching, third year = consistent and proper flowering.

In the cold season, the plants appear as leafless sticks that appear dry - this is perfectly normal and the plants are as viable as possible.
