Clematis 'Multi Blue' is a variety with large flowers measuring 10-15 cm and blooms in the spring season. The flower of this variety is unique - it opens as a simple flower but over time the inner petals develop, and the flower as a whole becomes double. This mainly happens during the spring bloom - in the summer-autumn wave, the flowers tend to remain semi-double or simple.

Classification: Early Large-flowered Group

Flower Appearance

  • Shape: The flowers are double, with multiple layers of overlapping tepals, giving them a full and rich look. The outer tepals are longer and wider, while the inner ones are shorter, creating an impressive three-dimensional texture.
  • Colour: The predominant colour is a deep blue-violet, sometimes with lighter shades towards the edges or centre, depending on the light and the flower’s stage of maturity. The vibrant tone is one of its defining features.
  • Size: The flowers have a diameter of 10-15 cm, considered large compared to other clematis varieties.
  • Flowering period: It blooms in two main waves – first in May-June on old wood, with double flowers, and then in August-September on new growth, when the flowers may be semi-double or simple but equally attractive.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height: Grows up to 2-3 meters, being a moderately sized climbing plant, suitable for trellises, fences, or pergolas.
  • Foliage: The leaves are medium green, oval, and glossy, providing a contrasting background for the blue-violet flowers.
  • Vigour: It is a robust plant with vigorous growth but not overly invasive, making it easy to manage.

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun or partial shade, with roots protected from direct light (by mulching or low plants at the base).
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Watering should be regular, avoiding excess moisture.
  • Pruning: Belongs to pruning group 2, which involves light pruning in spring (about 1 meter from the ground) to remove dead wood and stimulate growth and further flowering.

Care and Resistance

  • Resistance: Resistant to most common clematis diseases and tolerates mild winters well.
  • Fertilising: Benefits from a balanced fertiliser applied in spring and summer to support abundant flowering.
  • Special care: To maintain the double flower appearance, it is important not to prune too harshly, as the double flowers mainly appear on old wood.

Origin

Clematis 'Multi Blue' was developed in the Netherlands by breeder J. van Zoest in the 1980s. It is considered a mutation of the variety 'The President', from which it inherited the intense blue colour but with the added feature of double flowers, making it more special.

First year = roots, second year = shoots and branching, third year = consistent and proper flowering.

In the cold season, the plants appear as leafless sticks that seem dry – this appearance is perfectly normal and the plants are as viable as possible.
