Clematite spectaculoase - Clematis 'Mrs. Norman Thompson' (Early Large-flowered Group)
Clematis 'Mrs. Norman Thompson' is a compact and diligent clematis that produces flowers over a long period, from May to July, with a welcome second bloom in September. The large flowers (approx. 10 cm), subtly scented, are a deep and rich violet with intense crimson stripes. They open fully to reveal attractive stamens of wine-red and cream color.
Classification: Early Large-flowered Group
Cultivation recommendations:
Large-flowered clematis prefer good quality soil, with high nutrient levels and good moisture, but well drained – they do not tolerate swampy soils where water stagnates. It is recommended to improve the soil with manure or compost at planting, if possible. In the case of cultivation in drier soils that tend to dry out quickly, cover the base with a layer of shredded bark (or another type of mulch) to retain soil moisture.
Clematis generally prefer a growing space with good sun exposure.
If your clematis blooms in May-June (late spring), cut off the dead flower heads after they finish to encourage a second flowering at the end of summer or autumn.
Be prepared to wait a few years until your clematis reaches its best form.
First year = roots, second year = shoots and branching, third year = consistent and proper flowering.
In the cold season, the plants appear as leafless sticks that seem dry – this appearance is perfectly normal and the plants are fully viable.
The plant height is measured including the pot.
