Clematis alpina (Clematis siberian, Clematis montan)
Clematis alpina is a perennial climbing plant, native to the mountainous regions of Europe, from the Pyrenees to the Caucasus and Siberia. It is valued in gardening for its numerous and beautiful flowers that appear in spring.
The plant can grow up to 2-3 meters tall, clinging with the help of its vines. The leaves are usually divided into two or three parts, with smooth edges and a light texture.
The flowers of the alpine clematis are simply formed, having four long sepals that resemble petals, in shades from light blue to deep purple. Sometimes, white variations may also occur. Each flower has a diameter of about 5-7 cm. The flowers are followed by seeds that float on the wind and have a fluffy appearance.
Clematis alpina grows best in places with morning sun and afternoon shade, in well-drained, neutral or slightly alkaline soils. It is a plant resistant to low temperatures, able to survive cold winters. It does not require special care, but light pruning after flowering can help stimulate growth for the next season.
In cultivation, it is often used in landscaping to cover steps, pergolas, or fences, or in combination with other climbing plants.
