Lime on stem - Citrus aurantifolia
Citrus aurantifolia, commonly known as Key lime or Lime, is a citrus species native to Southeast Asia. It is a small evergreen shrub or tree with thorny branches and small, ovate, deep green leaves. The flowers are small, white, and very fragrant. The fruits are small, round, with a thin green peel (which turns yellow when ripe), very juicy pulp, and extremely acidic, with an intense and fresh aroma.
Unlike the lemon, the lime has a stronger acidity and a more complex aroma, being essential in Asian, Mexican, and Caribbean cuisine.
Main features:
- Size: 2–4 m tall (remains smaller in a pot, 1.5–2.5 m)
- Fruits: small, green, very acidic and aromatic
- Fruiting period: can flower and bear fruit almost all year round under good conditions
- Hardiness: more sensitive to cold than lemon (tolerates down to -2°C / -3°C for a short time)

- Fertilizing: regular with citrus fertilizer during the growing season
Uses: Lime is highly valued in the kitchen for its acidic and aromatic juice. It is used in preparing drinks (mojito, caipirinha, lemonades), sauces, marinades, desserts, and Asian dishes. Also, the peel can be used to flavor teas or to make essential oils.
A decorative and productive plant, ideal for terraces, balconies, or bright greenhouses. It looks elegant and provides fresh fruits throughout the year under good growing conditions.
