Strawberry tree - Arbutus unedo 'Compacta'
Arbutus unedo 'Compacta' - compact cultivar, with narrow and long leaves. It grows like a thick bush and reaches a height of approx. 2m. Fruiting is similar to the basic species.
Arbutus unedo, popularly called 'Strawberry Tree', is an evergreen shrub that comes from the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe.
It is well known due to its very attractive fruits, which have an appearance somewhat similar to strawberries.
The fruit is a red-orange sphere with a rough surface and a diameter of up to 2 cm, sweet when ripe, and contains small brown seeds. The ripening of the fruit takes up to 12 months - it usually occurs at the next flowering, the fruits remaining in the shrub until this moment.
It blooms between October and May, being among the few plants that bloom in the cold season.
Arbustus unedo is also highly appreciated for its great decorative value - its glossy, always green foliage, its white and yellow flowers mixed with fruits from the previous season - all this gives the plant a truly unique appearance.
