Red gooseberry without thorns - Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator'
Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' is a gooseberry variety with a very small number of thorns (sometimes non-existent) . This cultivar is known for its large, sweet and attractive fruits.
The fruit of the Agris Captivator specimens has an oval or spherical shape, with a medium to large size. The color of the fruits varies from dark red to almost black, depending on the stage of maturity. The surface of the fruit is smooth and slightly shiny, which makes it visually attractive.
The taste of the fruits is sweet, with a slight hint of acidity, which makes them suitable for fresh consumption or in various culinary preparations, such as jams, jellies, juices or desserts. The texture of the fruits is fleshy and juicy, and the seeds inside are relatively small and a little disturbing.
The fruits appear on the branches of the plant in the summer months, usually starting with June and until August, depending on the climate and growing conditions.
Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' prefers partially shaded, cooler locations. In the warm season, the plant appreciates additional irrigation. It grows upwards in the form of a vigorous bush, reaching up to 120 cm.
This variety is not 100% thornless - it develops much rarer and smaller thorns, especially on old, lemnified growth (generally at the base). For this reason, the old branches are pruned in autumn.
Self-fertile variety - does not require the planting of another specimen for pollination. It does not require special soil and is resistant to diseases and pests, being naturally considered "pest free". It withstands extreme temperatures, up to -35 °C
