The Pseudolarix bonsai, also known as Pseudolarix amabilis or the golden larch, is a tree native to East Asia, valued in bonsai art for its attractive foliage and the beautiful color change of its leaves in autumn. It is a deciduous tree, with leaves that turn golden or orange before falling, making it a special specimen in bonsai collections.

Description: Pseudolarix amabilis has slow growth and can be shaped into various stylistic forms in bonsai art. The leaves resemble those of conifers but differ in that they fall off during the cold season. The cones are small and spherical, adding an extra decorative element.

Care:

  1. Light: The Pseudolarix bonsai prefers strong light but should be protected from direct sun during summer to avoid leaf burn. The ideal placement includes a few hours of direct sun in the morning or evening, with partial shade during the day.

  2. Watering: Watering should be regular and adjusted according to the season. The soil should be kept moist but not saturated. Avoid letting water stagnate in the saucer under the pot.

  3. Humidity: Although it tolerates variable humidity well, misting the foliage can help, especially during hot, dry summers or if the bonsai is kept indoors.

  4. Fertilizing: Fertilize from spring to autumn with a balanced fertilizer specially formulated for bonsai, following the instructions on the package.

  5. Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring before the plant begins active growth. This involves root pruning and completely replacing the soil to ensure a fresh and healthy environment.

  6. Cold protection: Since it is a deciduous tree, the Pseudolarix bonsai should be protected during winter in cold climate regions. It may require shelter in a cool place, but protected from freezing.
