Poinsettia was cultivated by the Aztecs in the humid mountainous regions of Mexico. They used this plant to fight fever. Later, in the 17th century, the Franciscans used the flowers in various religious ceremonies. Its cultivation and popularization began in the 1860s, and soon the plant became indispensable in Christmas decorations.

Placement: bright but shaded spot, protected from drafts

Characteristics: Starting in November, the leaves of this plant turn red, beginning from the tip towards the base. Poinsettia should be kept away from drafts and excessive watering. It is a fast-growing shrub, valued for its dense and brightly colored crown.
