Selenicereus (Epiphyllum) chrysocardium - fragrant flowers
Selenicereus chrysocardium , also known as Marniera chrysocardium , is a spectacular epiphytic cactus, originally from the tropical forests of Mexico. It is appreciated for its long, flat, ribbon-shaped leaves and large, fragrant flowers, which are particularly decorative. The plant is ideal for hanging pots.
Stems : The stems are flat, juicy, ribbon-shaped, with wavy or jagged edges. They can reach lengths of 1-2 meters, being ideal for hanging pots or to create decorative effects.
Flowers : The flowers are large (20-30 cm in diameter), white or cream, with very visible golden stamens. They are fragrant and open at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators. Flowering occurs in mature plants, usually under optimal conditions of care.
Roots : The plant has aerial roots, characteristic of epiphytic cacti, which allow it to absorb moisture from the air.
Growth : It is a vigorous plant, with fast growth in favorable conditions.
Care Selenicereus (Marniera) chrysocardium
Light :
- Prefers strong indirect light.
- Avoid direct exposure to intense sunlight, which can burn the stems.
- It is suitable for indoors, next to windows facing east or west.
Temperature :
- It develops optimally at temperatures between 18°C and 26°C.
- It does not tolerate cold or temperatures below 10°C.
Watering :
- Water the plant moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist.
- Let the top layer of soil dry between waterings.
- In winter, watering should be reduced, but do not let the soil dry out completely.
Humidity :
- It prefers a moderate to high level of humidity.
- Spray the plant with non-calcareous water on hot days or in dry environments.
Ground :
- It needs a well-drained substrate, specific for epiphytes or a mixture for orchids combined with soil for cacti.
- Add tree bark, perlite and peat to create an aerated substrate.
Fertilization :
- Apply a weak liquid fertilizer (for orchids or cacti) once every 2-4 weeks during the period of active growth (spring and summer).
- Do not fertilize during the rest period (autumn and winter).
Replanting :
- Replant every 2-3 years, using a fresh substrate.
- Suspended or wide pots are ideal to accommodate the growth of stems.
