Mediocalcar umboiense is a miniature epiphytic orchid species, native to the low montane forests of Umboi Island in the Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, where it grows at altitudes of about 600 meters. It has a creeping rhizome, small pseudobulbs, and succulent, elliptical, green leaves grouped in clusters, about 2-4 cm long. It produces terminal inflorescences with solitary, bell-shaped flowers, colored in bright shades of yellow or orange with narrower segments, blooming simultaneously and visually similar to Mediocalcar decoratum, but larger in the vegetative parts. It is easy to cultivate in terrariums, preferring warm to intermediate temperatures (below 30°C), high humidity, moderate indirect light, and well-drained soil, without allowing water stagnation.
