Hippeastrum , popularly known as Amaryllis , is a genus of bulbous plants, native to South America, renowned for its large, spectacular and colorful flowers , which usually bloom in winter or spring, often indoors.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Bulb: Large, round or slightly elongated. The bulb is the underground part from which both the leaves and the flower stem originate.

• Leaves: Long, linear, deep green, appearing either before or after flowering, depending on the variety.

• Flowering stem: Erect, succulent, leafless, which can reach 30–60 cm in height.

• Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped, with 6 petals , available in various colors: red, pink, white, coral, orange, bicolor or striped . The flowers appear grouped (2–6) at the top of the stem and have a strong visual impact.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Hippeastrum needs intense, but indirect light , especially during growth and flowering.

• Soil: Light, well-drained. A mixture of potting soil with sand or perlite can be used.

• Watering: Moderate during growth and flowering; water only when the substrate is dry on the surface. After flowering, watering is gradually reduced, preparing the plant for rest.

• Temperature: Prefers medium to warm temperatures.

• Fertilization: During the active period (from the moment the leaves appear until the end of summer), fertilize every 2 weeks with fertilizer for flowering plants.

• Dormancy: To bloom annually, Hippeastrum needs a dormant period of 8–10 weeks , during which the bulbs are kept cool and dark, without watering.

• Planting: The bulb is planted in a pot with the top exposed above the soil, in late fall or winter, to bloom after 6–10 weeks.
