Vanda pumila (also known as Trudelia pumila in some older classifications) is a spectacular miniature botanical species of monopodial epiphytic orchid from the Cristatae section, native to northern India (Assam, Himalayan regions), southern China, Myanmar, and neighboring areas, at moderate to low altitudes (up to 1000-1500 m).

It is one of the most compact Vandas – the plant remains small (15-30 cm tall at maturity), with long, narrow, strap-like, glossy dark green leaves arranged in two rows. The roots are fine and numerous, making it sensitive to prolonged dryness but easy to mount in wooden baskets or open pots.

The flowers are large relative to the plant size (4-6 cm diameter), widely open, with a thick, waxy texture, ranging from creamy white to pale yellow-white, with a lip marked by intense red-purple spots or stripes in the center – a stunning contrast! They have a pleasant and pronounced fragrance (fragrant, sweet-floral, sometimes described as sweet floral or slightly citrus), especially on sunny days with good humidity – a rare bonus for small Vandas!

It usually blooms in autumn-winter-spring (but can bloom anytime when mature), with 2-5 flowers on short spikes, long-lasting (up to 3-4 weeks or more). Small plants bloom well already!

Main features:

  • Size: miniature-compact (15-30 cm), ideal for small spaces or windowsills
  • Leaf type: narrow strap-like, glossy green
  • Flower type: 4-6 cm, creamy white with red-purple lip, sweetly fragrant
  • Blooming period: autumn-winter-spring (possibly repeated)
  • Fragrance: yes, pleasant and pronounced (sweet-floral)

Simple and practical care (easy to grow for a Vanda):

  • Light: intense indirect to strong (2500-4000 fc), Cattleya-level or more; tolerates morning/late sun but avoids strong midday sun
  • Temperature: warm-intermediate (day 24-30°C, night 18-22°C), tolerates heat well, but day/night difference helps flowering
  • Watering: frequent and abundant (daily or every 2 days in summer, with roots drying quickly between waterings); fine roots die if too dry, but avoid stagnant excess water
  • Humidity: high (55-80%), with excellent ventilation to prevent fungal issues
  • Substrate: wooden basket/open basket without substrate (best for free roots), or coarse bark mix. Small amounts of sphagnum can be added
  • Fertilization: regular diluted (orchid fertilizer weekly at 1/4-1/2 dose of package instructions during growing season)

A superb species for collectors – compact, easy to flower, with large fragrant flowers and elegant appearance! Vigorous once acclimated, heat-resistant, and perfect for bright indoor spaces or warm greenhouses – a true miniature tropical gem!
