Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland', also known as woodland sage or eastern sage, is a popular perennial plant in gardens worldwide due to its vibrant flowers and easy care. This sage variety has deep violet flowers and is valued for its long flowering period, which can last from early summer to early autumn.

Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' grows as compact shrubs, generally reaching a height of 45-60 cm and a similar width. The leaves are dark green, lance-shaped, and slightly rough to the touch. The flowers are arranged in dense spikes, providing a beautiful contrast with the green leaves. This plant is hardy and can tolerate a variety of climatic conditions, withstanding minimum temperatures down to -34°C (-30°F).

Care

  • Light: Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' prefers full sun exposure but can also tolerate partial shade, especially in areas with very hot summers.
  • Soil: The plant adapts to most soil types but prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It does not tolerate overly wet soils well.
  • Watering: Watering should be moderate. Sage likes slightly moist soil but should not be left standing in water. Reduce watering during winter.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and possibly repeat during the active growth period to support flowering.
  • Pruning: Removing wilted flowers can promote new blooms. At the end of the season, cut the plant back close to ground level to help regeneration the following spring.
  • Dividing: To avoid overcrowding and maintain healthy plants, it is recommended to divide the clumps every 3-4 years.

Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' is also resistant to pests and diseases, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer low-maintenance gardening methods. This plant attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding even more value to your garden.
