African violets (Saintpaulia) are small and delicate houseplants, native to Tanzania and Kenya. They are known for their colorful and abundant flowers, which can be single, double or semi-double, in various shades of blue, violet, pink, red, white and yellow. The leaves of African violets are velvety, green in color, with scalloped or wavy edges.

Care tips:

Light: Prefers strong, indirect light. Avoid direct sun exposure, which can burn the leaves. An ideal position is near a window facing east or west.

Temperature: The ideal temperature is between 18 and 24°C. Sudden temperature fluctuations can cause flower drop.

Watering: Water the plant when the soil is dry on the surface. Water from below or with a pipette to avoid wetting the leaves.

Humidity: African violets prefer moderate humidity. Avoid spraying the leaves, as it can make them prone to fungal diseases.

Soil: Use well-drained soil, specially for African violets. The soil should be airy and retain enough moisture.

Fertilization: Fertilize the plant once a month, during the growing period (spring-summer), with a diluted fertilizer for flowering plants. Use a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium. Avoid fertilizing during winter.

Repotting: Repot the plant every 2-3 years, in a pot with a diameter 1-2 cm larger than the previous one. Choose a pot with drainage holes to avoid water stagnation. Repotting is done in spring or summer.
