Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata
Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is a rare succulent plant from the Euphorbiaceae family, valued for its columnar appearance and unique variegation, with green and yellow stems. Considered extinct in the wild and native to the Palghat Gap region of India, this variety is cultivated for its exotic beauty and is ideal as an indoor plant, for succulent collections, or rock gardens.
Leaf and flower appearance
- Leaves: The leaves are small, green, and delicate, appearing temporarily at the tips of the stems and falling quickly, but regenerating rapidly. The stems are the main decorative feature, with an intense green color, well-defined ridges, and yellow or cream variegation that varies on each branch, creating a unique appearance.
- Flowers: The flowers are small and yellow, appearing during summer, but are rare indoors. They have no significant ornamental value, with the focus being on the variegated stems.
Growth characteristics
- Height and width: It reaches 20-40 cm in height and 15-30 cm in width in pots, but can grow up to 1 m under optimal conditions, branching into a tree-like shape at maturity.
- Vigor: Slow but steady growth, with columnar stems that resemble a cactus, although it is a succulent. It is compact and suitable for small spaces.
- Type: Perennial, evergreen succulent plant.
Growing conditions
- Exposure: Prefers bright indirect light or partial sun. Ideal near a south- or east-facing window. It can tolerate direct sunlight, but must be protected from sunburn in hot climates.
- Soil: Grows in well-drained, sandy or rocky soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Use a cactus mix with perlite or vermiculite.
- Watering: Water sparingly, once every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid excess water, which causes root rot.
- Temperature: Hardy in zones 10-11 (down to 5°C). Prefers temperatures of 21-29°C during the day and 15°C at night. In Romania, it is grown as an indoor plant, protected from frost.
Care and hardiness
- Hardiness: Very tolerant of drought and neglect, but sensitive to excessive moisture. It may be affected by mites or fungi; inspect it regularly and treat it with organic fungicides. It tolerates urban pollution well.
- Fertilization: It does not require frequent fertilization. Apply diluted cactus fertilizer (e.g., 3-1-2) once every 2 months in spring and summer, only if the plant has not been repotted.
- Pruning: Cut off damaged or dry branches with sterile tools to prevent infections. Handle with care because of the toxic sap.
- Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings, which should be cut and left to dry for a few days before planting in moist substrate.
- Warning: The white, milky sap is toxic and irritating to the skin and eyes. Wear gloves when handling and keep it away from children and animals.
Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is ideal for succulent collections, decorative pots, or rock gardens. Its variegated stems add a focal point to modern, minimalist, or bohemian décor. It combines well with other succulents, such as aloe or agave, and is suitable for windowsills or terrariums.
Origin
Native to the Palghat Gap in India, Euphorbia mayurnathanii is now considered extinct in the wild and exists only in cultivation. The variegated form was selected for its decorative appearance and is protected by CITES due to its rarity.
