Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae 'Variegata' is the label for a collector's Hoya, similar in appearance to Hoya burtoniae, but not published at species level. It has a compact, trailing habit, while the pubescent foliage combines green, cream and sometimes pink on new growth. The variegation is genuine and occurs on the leaf blade, not as splash variegation. This lot is a compact pot, separated from the established specimens and full pots listed in the catalogue. The small, burgundy-red flowers are described as having a strong honey fragrance. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and variegation. The leaves are pubescent, relatively thick, with visible venation, and are often larger than those of Hoya burtoniae. Green areas alternate with cream sections. In bright light, the foliage may develop reddish or burgundy tones. Variegation intensity varies; the same pot may contain variegated vines and vines that have reverted to green. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, almost spherical, burgundy-red, with a lighter corona, and are grouped in compact umbels. The fragrance is described as strong, with a honey note. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The formula sp. aff. burtoniae indicates an incompletely identified plant with affinities to Hoya burtoniae Kloppenb., an accepted species from Luzon. It is not a published species name and is not “endemic” as a taxon. In horticultural sources, this material has also been incorrectly labelled as Hoya bilobata or Hoya tsangii. Its placement in section Acanthostemma remains a horticultural reference.
