Hoya sipitangensis

Hoya sipitangensis is a climbing species with compact foliage whose leaves can visibly change color in bright light, from green to reddish or purplish tones. Appreciated both for the contrast of its leaves and for its numerous creamy-white flowers with red centers, the plant combines year-round ornamental appeal with delicate, sweetly scented blooms. Color intensity naturally varies between leaves and individual plants.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are oval to lanceolate, with a smooth surface and variable dimensions. In brighter light, they may develop red or purplish shades; this reaction is not variegation and does not appear identically on every leaf. The plant grows as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte and can be trained onto a support.

Flowers and fragrance. The small flowers have creamy-white corollas and coronas with red centers, grouped in abundant umbels, often with 25–30 flowers. The inflorescences have a sweet fragrance, compared in botanical literature to that of Hoya lacunosa, and the flowers may last for approximately one week.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya sipitangensis Kloppenb. & Wiberg is an accepted botanical name, published in 2002 and inspired by the locality of Sipitang in Sabah.
