Coelogyne speciosa Orchid

Coelogyne speciosa is a botanical orchid from Southeast Asia, with well-defined pseudobulbs, firm leaves, and large flowers relative to the plant’s size. Its richly marked lip makes each flower distinctive, while its subtle fragrance completes its presence. Mature specimens can bloom repeatedly from previously formed pseudobulbs.

Light and temperature. Provide medium to bright, filtered light, without strong direct midday sun. It adapts well to intermediate to warm temperatures, with good ventilation and no prolonged overheating behind glass.

Watering and fertilizing. During growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to approach dryness between waterings. The pseudobulbs should not be left shriveled for long periods. During the active season, use diluted orchid fertilizer, then occasionally flush the substrate with plain water.

Substrate and repotting. Choose a stable pot and an airy mix containing bark and a component that retains a little moisture. Repot when new roots appear; you can use substrate for vigorous-growing orchids. Avoid dividing a small plant: a mature clump is more likely to bloom spectacularly.

Signs to watch for. Soft pseudobulbs often indicate overwatering and damaged roots. Pale leaves or leaves with scorched spots show that intense light was introduced too abruptly.
