Actinidia kolomikta 'Dr. Szymanowski' is a self-fertile actinidia cultivar from the Actinidiaceae family, renowned for its exotic ornamental appearance. This deciduous perennial climbing plant is valued for the vibrant colors of its leaves, which transition from green to pink and white, and for its edible fruits. Native to East Asia, the 'Dr. Szymanowski' variety is ideal for ornamental gardens, pergolas, fences, or as an accent plant, adding colorful and dynamic charm to temperate landscapes.

Leaf and Flower Appearance

  • Leaves: The leaves are ovate, 5-10 cm long, with serrated edges, initially a deep green that transforms into spectacular variegation: the upper half turns pink and white, creating a unique tricolor effect. This variegation appears mainly on mature plants. In autumn, the leaves yellow before falling.
  • Flowers: The flowers are small, white or cream, 1-2 cm in diameter, clustered in racemes, appearing in May-June. They are discreet but lightly fragrant, attracting pollinators such as bees.

Fruit Appearance

  • Fruits: The fruits are small, oval, about 2 cm, greenish-yellow, with sweet, juicy pulp similar to Actinidia arguta varieties. They ripen in September-October, are edible, and can be eaten fresh or in desserts. This cultivar is self-fertile, producing fruit without a male pollinator.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height and Width: Reaches 3-5 meters in height and 1-2 meters in width, being a climbing plant that clings to supports.
  • Vigor: Moderate to fast growth, with flexible stems ideal for covering fences or pergolas.
  • Type: Deciduous perennial plant, with leaves falling in winter.

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers a sunny or semi-shaded spot to maximize leaf variegation. In dense shade, colors are less intense.
  • Soil: Grows in fertile, well-drained soils with slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7). Add compost to improve fertility.
  • Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. It is tolerant of moderate drought once established.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 3-8 (down to -35°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania.

Care and Resistance

  • Resistance: Very resistant to cold and common diseases. May be affected by aphids or mites; treat with organic methods. Tolerates moderate drought and wind.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and summer, every 4-6 weeks, to stimulate growth.
  • Pruning: Prune in spring, removing dead or crossing branches to maintain shape and stimulate branching.
  • Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings or layering in spring.
