Philodendron ‘Ring of Fire’ is one of the rarest and most striking variegated varieties, highly valued by collectors for the unique way it combines shades of green, cream, yellow, orange, and red. Each leaf is different, and the serrated edges give a dramatic, almost “flaming” appearance, hence its iconic name.

Initially, the plant was named ‘Henderson’s Pride’, after the breeder Keith Henderson (Asiatica Nursery). Although he did not officially reveal the hybrid’s parents, it is believed to come from the crossing of:

  • Philodendron tortum (polypodioides) – with split, architectural foliage

  • Philodendron wendlandii – known for its velvety texture and hardiness

🌿 Fascinating botanical features

Philodendron ‘Ring of Fire’ has nectar-producing glands on the underside of its leaves. These attract ants, and the plant benefits from the substances secreted by them, as well as the protection that ant colonies provide against other pests. This is a rare mutualistic relationship found in only a few species of araceae.

🌱 Care

  • Light: strong indirect light; insufficient light may reduce variegation.

  • Watering: moderate; allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Humidity: >60% for firm leaves and optimal coloration.

  • Soil: airy, rich in organic and mineral matter, with excellent drainage.

  • Temperature: 18–28°C; avoid cold drafts.

⭐ Important notes and observations

  • Delicate foliage: leaves may show small defects, scars, or slightly dry edges – a normal phenomenon for this variety.

  • The level of variegation naturally varies from one plant to another; all specimens show the specific variegation, but the pattern cannot be identical.

  • Plants are selected at random.
