Euphorbia obesa, also known by the common name “ball plant” or “baseball plant”, is a succulent native to South Africa, highly valued for its spherical shape and almost geometric, graphic appearance. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is ideal for collections of rare succulents, minimalist decor, or bright corners with small-sized plants.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

Form: A succulent plant with a globular or slightly cylindrical shape, becoming taller as it ages. It can reach up to 10–15 cm in height and diameter, with very slow growth.

Leaves: It has no visible leaves – these are reduced to small, short-lived structures. The actual leaf has been replaced by the succulent stem, which also takes on the function of photosynthesis.

Stem: Thick, succulent, round or slightly elongated in shape, with 8–10 rounded ribs. The surface is green-gray with darker horizontal stripes and dots, giving a natural decorative look. It can turn slightly reddish under strong light.

Flowers: Small, yellow-green, grouped in cyathia (typical floral structures of euphorbias), appearing at the top of the plant. It is a dioecious species, meaning plants are either male or female – so both are needed for seed production.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

Light: Prefers bright indirect light or filtered sun. In good light, the coloration becomes more intense, but it should be protected from the direct midday heat, especially in summer.

Watering: Low. Water only when the soil is completely dry, especially in summer. It goes dormant in winter and watering is greatly reduced.

Soil: Very well drained, ideally a substrate for cacti and succulents, with added coarse sand or perlite.

Temperature: Thrives in warm climates but must be protected from low temperatures. It does not tolerate frost.

Humidity: Does not require high humidity. Adapts well to the dry air inside homes.

Fertilizing: Once every 1–2 months during the warm season, with fertilizer for cacti, in small doses.

Euphorbia obesa is a unique succulent plant with a sculptural appearance, adding a touch of elegance and curiosity to any collection. Its spherical shape, fine texture, and discreet natural pattern make it a perfect decorative piece for lovers of unusual and minimalist plants.
