Encyclia cordigera is an epiphytic orchid species native to Central America (from Mexico to Panama). It is one of the most appreciated species in the Encyclia genus due to its large, elegant flowers and pleasant fragrance.

The plant forms ovoid-conical pseudobulbs, grouped, 6-10 cm long, from which usually two dark green, rigid, linear-lanceolate leaves emerge. The inflorescence is erect or slightly curved and can carry 5-12 flowers. The flowers are relatively large for this genus (up to 5-7 cm in diameter), with sepals and petals in green-brown or bronze tones, and the labellum (lip) is creamy white, heart-shaped, with intense purple or magenta veins and spots. They have a sweet and pleasant fragrance, more pronounced in the evening hours.

Main features:

  • Large flowers (5-7 cm), elegant, with a heart-shaped lip
  • Sweet and pleasant fragrance
  • Robust pseudobulbs and rigid leaves
  • Flowering period: spring - early summer
  • Growth: moderate, suitable for medium collections

Simple and practical care:

  • Light: intense, similar to Cattleya (2500-3500 fc)
  • Temperature: intermediate (day 22-28°C, night 14-18°C)
  • Watering: moderate during the growth period; allow the substrate to partially dry between waterings
  • Humidity: medium (50-70%), with good ventilation
  • Substrate: medium-coarse bark or mounted on cork/fern
  • Rest period: watering is significantly reduced in autumn-winter

Encyclia cordigera is a relatively easy species to grow compared to other Encyclia, very resilient, with large and attractive flowers. It is a good choice both for beginners and collectors who appreciate orchids with fragrance and generously sized flowers.
