Doryopteris cordata, commonly known as Antenna Fern, is a small, compact fern native to South America. It is highly valued for its unusual appearance: it has low, rounded sterile leaves that are glossy dark green, while the fertile leaves are taller and thin, resembling antennas, hence the common name.

The plant remains compact (usually 15-30 cm), grows slowly, and has an elegant, exotic look. It is one of the easier ferns to care for and is perfect for terrariums, small pots, or as a collector’s plant on a windowsill.

Main features:

  • Glossy dark green leaves with distinctive antenna-shaped fertile fronds
  • Compact and unusual appearance
  • Slow to moderate growth
  • Suitable for high humidity environments
  • Size: 15-30 cm tall

Easy care:

  • Light: medium to bright indirect light (tolerates bright semi-shade)
  • Temperature: warm, ideally 18-26°C. Does not tolerate long-term temperatures below 12-13°C
  • Watering: regular, keep the substrate slightly moist (do not let it dry out completely, but avoid overwatering)
  • Humidity: high (60-80%) – thrives in terrariums or with frequent misting
  • Substrate: light, airy, and well-drained

Recommended substrate: For optimal growth and to maintain proper moisture without risk of rot, we recommend the Professional Substrate for Anthurium, Hoya, Bromeliaceae, and Ferns - SG Mix from Secret Garden. → Professional Substrate for Anthurium, Hoya, Bromeliaceae, and Ferns - Secret Garden

This substrate is specially designed for ferns and other plants that prefer an airy environment rich in organic matter with excellent drainage.

Uses: Doryopteris cordata is ideal for terrariums, small pots on windowsills, offices, or spaces with high humidity. Its compact and unusual appearance makes it an excellent choice for collectors or anyone looking for a fern different from the classic types.

An attractive, compact fern that is relatively easy to grow, perfect for tropical plant lovers and terrarium enthusiasts!
